Ambati Thirupathi Rayudu was an Indian professional cricketer who played between 2013 to 2019.
Born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, the wicket-keeper batsman started his first-class career at the age of 16 when he represented Hyderabad in 2002. He then joined the India A team in the following year. Rayudu was named the captain for the 2004 ICC U-19 World Cup. Until then, things looked fine as far as his international debut was concerned. But differences with other players and the association alongside his signing with the "rebel" Indian Cricket League cost him his chances. He restarted his domestic career after aligning with the BCCI's policies and leaving ICL in 2009.
Ambati showed his caliber with the bat for Baroda and the Mumbai Indian in the IPL which earned him a place in the Indian squad for the first time in 2012. He waited another year to finally make his international debut against Zimbabwe in the ODI series.
In the 2019 ICC World Cup, Rayudu was in a good condition to be selected for the Indian squad. But things took a turn and the selectors picked the all-rounder Vijay Shankar calling him a "three-dimensional cricketer". Rayudu took a dig at the selectors when he told everyone on social media that he had bought 3D glasses to watch the World Cup from home.
Soon after, he announced his shocking retirement from all formats of the game in July, 2019. But later in August, he turned down his decision, and announced that he was ready to play all formats of the game.
He was a prime player for the Mumbai Indians from 2010-2017 and had scored 300+ runs 5 times. He was then signed by the Chennai Super Kings and has shown immense batting performance for the yellow team thus far. He smashed his IPL career-best 600+ runs in his first year with the team. He was bought by CSK in the 2022 mega auction for 6.75 crore rupees. He was subsequently retained for the 2023 season, where he played a match-winning knock in the final to bring the curtains down on his career.
Ambati Rayudu's net worth is estimated at 48 crore rupees or $6 million.
