He played for the Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League (NHL). Gorence was drafted in the first round, 15th overall, by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. He played in the NHL for parts of four seasons, from 1979–80 to 1982–83, with the North Stars, Rangers, and Kings. He also played in the American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey League (IHL). Gorence retired from professional hockey in 1985.
